Description
"Isle of Wight Council is under duty to improve the public health of the population of the Isle of Wight and this service specification is a discharge of that duty." In 2019 it was estimated that on the Isle of Wight 14.4% (England value is 13.9%) of the adult population were current smokers, equating to an estimated 16,844 (18+) smokers (PHOF: Local Tobacco Control Profiles, July 2020). The Healthy lifestyle rapid needs assessment (April 2019) identified that whilst overall smoking prevalence has fallen, there is marked variation in rates between socio-economic groups and geographical area. In 2017, 52.2% of adults in routine and manual occupations smoked and 39.5% (estimated n = 386) adults with serious mental illness smoked, which is significantly higher than smoking prevalence in the general population. Smoking is the largest preventable cause of foetal and infant illness and death and smoking in pregnancy has significant health risks for the mother too. In 2017/18 14.5% (estimated n = 170) pregnant women smoked at the time of delivery.
