Description
Improvements to a footbridge over the Mill Stream in Marston Magna, South Somerset. The footbridge carries public footpath Y 15/20 in the Parish of Marston Magna and connects Rimpton Road with four properties and St Mary's Church to the south. The bridge is a local lias stone arch construction with York stone slab surface, iron work parapets with the addition of oak end posts. It holds local historic interest. The oak posts have rotted and are now loose and the iron work has bent outwards and the rails are no longer straight. There is vegetation growing within the crown and spandrel walls of the bridge. In addition the deck is very slippery especially in wet conditions. The proposed works include: • Lifting the deck and removing it for abrasive blasting to roughen the surface, • Straightening the parapet rails and supporting posts, • Supplying and installing two additional parapet supporting posts to match the current posts, • Designing, supplying and installing four metal parapet end posts (to replace oak posts), • Designing, supplying and installing steel bracing for both the existing and new parapet supporting posts and end posts, • Painting the parapets and reinstalling, • Re-laying the stone slabs, • Raking out vegetation growth across both elevations, replacing missing/damaged masonry and pointing where necessary.
