Description
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a diverse group of substances that can alter the function of the endocrine system and consequently cause adverse effects in people and wildlife. The Environment Agency wishes to gather up-to-date information on the use and environmental presence of known and suspected EDCs in the UK, so that risk management can be targeted in the most effective way. Parabens are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid (also known as 4-hydroxybenzoic acid) and several substances within this chemical group have been identified as endocrine disrupters by some organisations. Several are registered under the REACH Regulation, with uses in cosmetics, personal care products, fragrances, adhesives and sealants. The objective of this project is to collect publicly available information about the level of chemical supply, use and environmental exposure of parabens with a focus on the UK.
