Description
To research nutrient pollution in relevant EU Member States, and the impact of the Dutch Nitrogen Ruling in relation to a) the planning system, b) agriculture c) how they may have dealt with it and d) possible lessons for the UK, with an additional focus on any innovative solutions that exist to tackle nutrient pollution (specifically removing nutrients from water). The Dutch Nitrogen Ruling determined that in circumstances where the conservation status of a natural habitat is unfavourable, the possibility of authorising activities which may subsequently affect the ecological situation of the sites concerned seems necessarily limited. Therefore, where a site was in unfavourable condition no further plans or projects that could impact upon the site should be agreed to, even if the impact of that development was fairly minor compared to other sources of pollution.
