Description
4 contracts were awarded to maintain and enhance the quality of initial teacher education (ITE) in the Further Education (FE) and training sector to meet the current and future demands of the nation's post-16 workforce. The Foundation wishes to support ITE wherever it is delivered, be it FE college, independent training provider, adult community learning or voluntary community sector organisation, in order to ensure the highest possible standards of teacher training via initial and continuous training for teacher trainers. We awarded 4 regional projects to trial approaches to the training of post-16 teacher trainers and to monitor and evaluate what works well in their training and development. Eventually we would like to see Professional Standards and, potentially, qualifications for teacher trainers that allow for the development of some national consistency and that are owned and valued by the target group of teachers. Each project runs across two financial years to allow for end to end evaluation of intention and impact. The Foundation sought plans for training and developing teacher trainers using evidence based methodologies where available, with the first cohorts started before March 2017.
