Description
In the UK seas, there are few estimates of the extent of ALDFG (Cefas, 2019 ). Those that do exist are rapid literature assessments or limited by time. In addition to the lack of understanding of the total quantities of ALDFG in the ocean and on our coasts, there is very little knowledge of fishers' views on and experience with ALDFG or the regulations in place to reduce its incidence. The aim of this research project is to gather data on fishers' views and experience with ALDFG, and the measures that have been put in place at varying scales to prevent and report gear losses and potential future measures on fishing gear management at end of life. In particular, this research aims to increase our understanding of fishers views on existing gear marking regulation and the reporting of lost gear. The outputs of this project will inform discussions at the national, regional and international level, including at the International Maritime Organisation on amendments to regulations to strengthen gear marking and reporting requirements. This contract was awarded by Defra.
