Description
In December 2020 the University declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency and in May 2021 the University set a target to reach net zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2035 from a 2019 baseline of 12,300 tonnes, with a maximum of 3,000 tonnes of offsetting. The University has reduced its scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions from a peak of 18,851 in 2012 to a low of 8,997 tonnes in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Emissions have risen back to 10,475 tonnes in 2021. The Wivenhoe Campus was completed in the mid-1960s by Kenneth Capon of the Architects Co-Partnership (ACP). It is a purpose designed university campus designed around five interlinked squares set in a 200-acre parkland to the southeast of Colchester. A key feature of the original architectural narrative of the Colchester campus is the metal framed single pane glass windows and the brutalist architecture. It consists of a reinforced concrete frame which has both precast and in-situ elements. The facades have exposed precast concrete columns and non-structural precast mullions. A significant part of achieving net zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions involves building fabric improvements and a priority will be the original 1960's single pane glass windows across much of the Colchester campus.
