Description
APHA require the production of a lineage of mice (mus musculus) which are homozygous for a bank-vole (Myodes glareolus) prion transgene. Prions cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) such as mad cow disease in cattle which is associated with variant CJD in humans. Animal TSEs are fatal and can be zoonotic i.e. can transmit from animals to human. Rodents are used for characterising these diseases and defining their zoonotic potential.
