Description

Various lettered speed differentials, including Sprinters (SP), Multiple Units (MU), (Diesel Multiple Units (DMU), Electric Multiple Units (EMU) and High Speed Trains (HST) classifications, have been used across the GB rail network. Differentials are dependent on the characteristics of rolling stock and infrastructure with the evolution of both leading to a variety of differentials being applied in many locations. In the research project 'Categorising the relationship between track condition, line speed, and vehicle forces' (T996), the rolling stock requirements for the Sprinter (SP) class, were investigated and codified. Equivalent work has not so far been undertaken for other lettered differentials. This project will look to identify numerate criteria for the speed differentials MU, EMU, DMU and HST to overcome the issues identified above. Furthermore, it will aim to demonstrate the benefits of applying these findings to the real world case studies
