Description
Contracts were awarded for a graduate training scheme for teachers focused on SET (Science Engineering and Technology), with an emphasis on those careers within the relevant routes of the Sainsbury Review. Whilst implementation of the Review is two academic cycles away, this was the ideal time to seek to grow the capacity of organisations who wish to be ready to benefit from the changes the Review will bring. Two consortia/hubs were sourced (led by general Further Education (FE) college, large Independent Training Providers (ITPs) or Higher Education Institutions (HEI)). The consortia worked to recruit and train, support and mentor graduates who wish to enter the teaching profession to deliver a majority of teaching within the SET subject areas. Consideration was given to those with sufficiently developed mathematics capability that they may also be able to work as GCSE maths specialist teachers alongside their core SET teaching, but this was a secondary aim. The scheme supported ancillary cost but not salary costs - support with recruitment, initial teacher education (ITE), mentoring and professional support were met through the programme.
