Description
Newark & Sherwood District Council has been awarded a Stage 1 development grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund for preparatory work towards a major project to protect and enhance the historic gatehouse at Newark Castle. The project will involve the gatehouse being fitted with a new roof and floors and a new access being opened up via the castle's northwest tower. The new areas will be used to house permanent and temporary exhibits, as the location for new interpretative experiences and as an education facility. The Council is seeking to appoint consultants to produce an Interpretation Strategy and Exhibition Design Plan for Newark Castle. The plan will be used to inform our project proposals, input to setting out our long term maintenance and management strategy for both the Gatehouse and wider Castle structure and to identify maintenance and management costs related to the interpretation and exhibition design scheme. The plan will also be used in support of an application for significant Heritage Lottery funding towards the delivery stage of the gatehouse project.
