Description
The Council has identified a need for a more efficient distribution of its 36 strong gritter vehicle fleet as well as appropriate and effective storage of its road salt reserves; it is well provided for in the east of the county but utilises historic infrastructure in the west. The current facilities are either non-compliant or fail to meet operational needs in terms of location, access or salt storage capacity which further hampers the service ability to respond to sudden changing weather conditions. A strategic review of the delivery of the statutory requirement for winter maintenance has resulted in the decision to close the current highways salt stores at Mere and Semington and to relocate and enhance the provision in alternative locations. It has also been determined that the site at Warminster offers the best combination of access and location whilst making the best use of existing assets.
