Description
Sellafield has a requirement to design and manufacture waste containers that are cost effective with respect to material, manufacturability, and infrastructure (throughput driven). These waste containers (WC) will be primarily used the for long-term storage of solid Low-Level Waste (LLW) which are intended to be temporarily stored in CHILW (interim storage facility) and subsequently in a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF). Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) material is identified as a potential solution for a cost-effective waste container solution. Therefore, under the governance of the Manufactured Product Organisation (MPO), the Civil Structural & Architectural (CS&A) capability is carrying out a series of gated technical exercises to establish a calibrated material model which will enable the substantiation of the waste container’s performance requirements via digital simulation.
