Description

EU exit presents challenges and opportunities to Defra. Defra is one of the most-affected EU exit departments in Government, with the EU impacting some 80% of Defra's activity. Like all departments, Defra is focused on securing the best deal for the UK, maximising the benefits of leaving the EU, while maintaining the maximum access to EU markets and strong relationships with our European neighbours. The work streams for EU exit include: • future farming (replacing the common agriculture policy and ensuring payments can be made on day 1 after delivering exit); • fisheries (replacing the common fisheries policy, taking back control of the UK's waters); • environment (maintaining and enhancing environmental protections and standards, and in particular maintaining an effective regulatory system for chemicals and fluorinated gases); • food (securing the freest possible trade with the EU and with third countries, while maintaining and improving environmental and animal health and welfare standards); • animal and plant health (maintaining ability to manage incursion of pests and diseases); • trade (establishing an independent UK schedule at the WorldTrade Organisation, and new trading agreements); and • there are also cross-cutting, or enabling work streams supporting on Programme Management, Negotiations, Legislation, Devolution, Digital, Commercial, Legal, Finance, HR, Strategy, and Communications.
