Description

To create a timber, weather resistant and sustainable viewing platform/tower (Architects designs attached and technical notes below). This will be a place for congregation of groups for teaching and learning about nature and the landscape along the existing board walk. Currently there is a continuous path leading around the reserve, with no area for small groups of people to stop, discuss and observe the surrounding landscape. The viewing platform will be built within an existing clearing where two existing paths converge, to reduce the disturbance onto the landscape. The site proposal is approximately 6m square, although extending marginally beyond this. This space will be sufficient for groups of people to congregate and learn about the reserve but it will not be overly generous which will reduce its implications onto the surrounding landscape. Beneath this platform much needed storage will be located to be facilitated by school groups and by rangers. Depending on space, there is a potential for bench seating to be placed within, on the round, to assist with teaching in adverse weather. The scale of the project is in line with the layout and area which has been defined by the existing site. There will be minimal associated landscaping proposed post construction, the area around the site will be allowed to return and grow back naturally. However, careful plant management will be completed to ensure the structure does not deteriorate too quickly and the making good of existing piling. The proposed platforms appearance has been defined by the plants and trees within the area. Taking the form of a rotunda, relating to the tree trunks in the close vicinity. The vertical boarding which will provide much needed balustrade will also act as a visual buffer between the user and the existing fauna within the area. This visual connection and use of natural materials will assist with creating a homogeneous and sympathetic connection between the site and platform.
