Description

This contract is Kirkoswald Castle Consolidation. Kirkoswald Castle, (NGR NY 5595 4102) is a late medieval high-status residential castle, standing on relatively level ground c 100 m above sea level and c 200 m south-east of the centre of the village of Kirkoswald, which stands close to the east bank of the Eden c 10.5 km north-east of Penrith. The fragments of the castle stand within a square moat and the grounds are scrub with a number of mature trees growing through the site. This project is primarily concerned with the principal upstanding part of the ruins, the Solar Tower with its north-western Garderobe Turret. The work is mostly concerned with the stabilisation of the top 10-12 courses of stonework, vegetation removal and replacing of key missing masonry and repointing of the stonework in party.Durham County Council (DCC) have secured grant monies from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for this Kirkoswald Castle Consolidation. Progression of this procurement exercise and any award of this contract opportunity will be conditional on confirmation of sufficient funds being available.
