Description
Chichester District Council is a Coast Protection Authority and manages numerous assets associated with managing flood and erosion risk. To manage the risk to navigation there is a need to mark the seaward end of some of these assets. This has been done with 37 fixed marker beacons, constructed using bullhead rail and attached (bolted) to timber groynes. A number of these marker beacons have or are reaching the end of their serviceable life with either the rail or timber no longer suitable for re-fixing. Some of these are also no longer accessible from the land even during low spring tide (tidal information is included in section 4.5) due to lowering of the lower foreshore, rendering pre-existing approaches to re-erecting them from the beach unsuitable. The Council is seeking to appoint a contractor to design and build at least five (but up to 9) new marker beacons to manage the risk to navigation. It is expected that over the coming years the majority of the beacons will need to be replaced and so we are seeking a design / approach that is easily repeatable.
