Description
The Forestry Commission is releasing a tender for Forest Surveying. This work will form part of the National Forest Inventory (NFI) of Great Britain and will cover the final 4 years of the 2nd 5-year cycle of NFI field data collection. The work will be broken into manageable Lots distributed across GB. Data assessed includes, amongst others, tree mensuration data, habitat & NVC, social indicators and forestry operations. The 1st cycle of the NFI is completed and during that time surveyors have assessed ≈500,000 trees from almost 28,000 stands. See http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/INFD-9M8F6P for the Survey Manual and full details of the current assessments. The 2nd cycle intends to reassess approximately 10,000 1st cycle 1-ha sample squares with a further 5,000 new sample squares to be assessed. In addition to carrying out NFI data collection surveyors have also collected ad hoc data for surveys including St. Jude’s storm damage and Chalara fraxinea spread. Details and interim results can be found at http://www.forestry.gov.uk/inventory.
