Description
The Green Distilleries Programme is a £12.33m Competition, which falls under the £1b Net Zero Innovation Portfolio which was announced as part of the government's 10-point plan in 2020. The Net Zero Innovation Portfolio will accelerate the commercialisation of innovative low-carbon technologies, systems and processes in the power, buildings and industrial sectors. The Green Distilleries Competition aims to facilitate the least cost and maximum value-added transition pathways to a lower-carbon economy. As the majority of distillery emissions come from generating heat (70% of the distillation industry's energy demand), this competition will focus on fuel switching. Stimulating early investment in the processes and technologies required for fuel switching to low carbon fuels for heat will directly impact the cost of decarbonising industry, heat, power, and transport. The Green Distilleries Competition is run in two Phases (feasibility and demonstration projects) and is split into two separate Lots (Lot 1 - will focus on fuel switching of the process and onsite power production, Lot 2 - will focus on innovation around fuel switch enabling technologies such as fuel conversion, transport and storage). £1.01m was awarded to 17 Phase 1 (feasibility studies) projects and ended on 31/03/2021. Phase 2 is providing up to £3,000,000 per project and will be funding 4 projects until 30/06/2023, during which successful projects can continue the development of their technology through to demonstration.
