Description
This project will continue investigating how different gear design features influence bycatch rates. If we can identify key factors, we can use them to develop effective mitigation methods and successfully reduce bycatch. Preliminary results provide strong evidence but the sample size has been too small and therefore further work (i.e. this trial) is required. The aim would be to assess whether thinner twine reduced cetacean bycatch rates. If this is demonstrated further work would need to look into the possible economic consequences. This experiment will help to focus in on how and why animals get caught, which is not a simple issue. This will enhance our understanding to the causes of bycatch and will help the development of effective bycatch mitigation measures. Reducing bycatch in UK waters is an Ministerial priority and has been publicly committed to on several occasions in recent months.
