Description
The former Sheerness Naval Dockyard Church stands on the entrance to the Sheerness Docks. The church was built in 1828 and is Grade II* Listed and is situated in the Sheerness Royal Naval Dockyard and Blue Town Conservation Area.In 2001 the Church suffered a serious fire putting it on the Historic England 'At Risk' register. The fire has rendered the building derelict with no roof. The building is currently stabilised with scaffolding after a substantial grant was awarded for this purpose from Historic England. Now, under the ownership of the Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust, and with a major grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this project will renovate and restore the building. We are seeking to sympathetically restore the building envelope back to its original 1828 form, re-instating the original roof and parapets, landscaping the grounds and creating parking for users. The interior will be a modern, architecturally pleasing and user-friendly environment.
