Description
Kirklees Council are looking to partner with a suitability experienced contractor to deliver a new Bus Station in Heckmondwike. The Heckmondwike Bus Station Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) scheme includes a suite of measures to upgrade the existing local bus hub in Heckmondwike, aimed towards driving a modal shift from private car to bus, increasing patronage and supporting local sustainable economic growth. The scheme also aims to enhance the placemaking function of this public asset by drawing on the town's textile and weaving heritage as part of an enhanced landscape design. The scheme will deliver infrastructure improvements to increase capacity at the Hub and improve passenger facilities. This includes the provision of improved waiting facilities for bus users, cycle parking to facilitate multi-modal interchange and for town centre users, new office space including management and driver facilities, an increase in the number of bus stands, to enhance operational resilience and accommodate a potential increase in services post-implementation. While the construction of the scheme will generate an increase in embodied carbon, it should be considered that the scheme will facilitate a reduction in carbon generated by user emissions, due to a shift away from private modes. By improving the facility, this will likely change the perception of bus travel for users within Heckmondwike in the wider area and promote carbon reductions in line with pathways targets set out by WYCA. In addition, by improving the aesthetics of the Bus Hub through landscaping and public realm enhancements, combined with supporting increasing bus use and multi-modal interchange, the proposals will help to deliver 'healthy streets' in the town centre. A summary of the interventions proposed: Increase in operational bus stands from 4 to 6, and the provision of 1 new layover bay. New station building comprising: 64m2 indoor waiting facilities for passengers, real-time travel information, and seating 68m2 bus operator office space, drivers toilet, and drivers mess room; and Green Roof. 5 cycle parking spaces incorporated as part of the enhanced landscape design; New functional landscaping features and improved public space for passengers and town centre visitors; Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS); and Green Wall. These works are being tendered under the YORBuild Framework.
