Description
The aim for the FGM pilot project is to establish a network of multidisciplinary team centres that operate nationally to better meet the needs of non-pregnant women that have undergone FGM. A key criticism of those affected by FGM is that current clinical framework fails to address the needs of younger women who have undergone FGM, women that are not pregnant or planning pregnancy. To ensure that the pilot FGM clinics are publicised to this cohort of women, it is imperative that good channels of communication are formed as part of the pilot project. This population of predominately BME women are more difficult to reach through conventional communication portals e.g patient information leaflets, mainstream websites and have a lower attendance at health services (other than SRH) which may sign-post them to the FGM pilot clinic. This population of women are more likely to self-refer to the FGM clinics and it is felt that a more innovative strategy is required to engage this population. Women of an older age will be targeted through using more traditional means such as community based organisations, health advocates and referral from other primary & secondary services. This communication process has already been implemented within the existing FGM Pilot Project Framework.
