Description
Wealden District Council obtained a 70 acre site on the outskirts of Uckfield to form a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANGS) mitigating the effect of new development on nearby Ashdown forest. The aim of a SANGS is to provide an alternative area of recreational green space, to divert a growing population from using the Ashdown Forest and damaging its delicate ecosystem by increased recreational pressure. The space has to appeal to a wide variety of users while appearing to be a natural environment, able to sustain footfall, both in terms of interest and the ability to remain viable and accessible during the winter months. Works will include the following: - Fencing including acoustic fencing - All weather footpaths and tracks - Tree and hedge planting - Ground modelling including formation of extensive earth bunds, creation of a pond, swales, ditches, etc - Wildflower meadows and swathes - Installation of signage, benches, wayfinders, educational boards, etc all as specified - Creation of amphitheatre feature During this period the contractor will also be responsible for all aspects of grounds maintenance to phases 1 and 2 of the site including formative pruning of the orchards.
